Turkey Cottage Pie (Gluten Free/Dairy Free/Low Fat)

The perfect healthy cottage pie recipe

to feed the family.

Serves: 6 people

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 25 minutes


Potato topping:

  • 4 medium sized potatoes

  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds

  • 2 tablespoons of cashew milk or milk of choice

Turkey filling:

  • 500 grams of turkey mince

  • 1 large brown onion

  • 4 cloves of garlic

  • 2 diced carrots

  • 2 diced zucchinis

  • ½ a tablespoon of minced ginger

  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste

  • 1 tablespoon of tamari

  • 1 cup of beef or chicken stock

  • 1 teaspoon of salt

  • ½ teaspoon of pepper

  • 1 teaspoon of thyme

  • 2 teaspoons of rosemary

  • Optional:

  • 1 teaspoon of cornstarch to thicken

  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds for topping


  1. Preheat your oven to 200C fan forced.

  2. Cut your potatoes into cubes then boil until tender.

  3. Dice your onion, carrots and zucchinis and mince your garlic and ginger.

  4. Heat oil in a pot and cook onions until translucent.

  5. Add in your ginger and garlic and cook until fragrant.

  6. Add your mince and carrots to the pot and cook for 5 minutes or until the meat is sealed. Then mix in your zucchini.

  7. Add in the tamari, stock, tomato paste, rosemary, thyme, salt and pepper.

  8. Bring to a simmer for 5 minutes. If your filling is looking really runny, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with a tablespoon of water and add to the pot.

  9. Drain your potatoes, add in the milk and mash.

  10. Pour your turkey filling into your baking tray and cover with your potato topping.

  11. Sprinkle sesame seeds over your potato and cook in the oven for 23-30 minutes or until your potato is golden.

  12. Enjoy!
